I have got to tell you that this DVD/CD set is something I should have had from the beginning. In my opinion it takes the beginner, in the best way I have ever seen, very carefully from square one, forward to playing tunes. May I suggest a web site link titled "Beginners Start Here" and list only two must have items, "Fundamentals of Five String..." and The Banjo Encyclopedia. Dennis Lottman

Ross Nickerson's Fundamentals of Five String Banjo Book, two CDs and DVD will help you get started with solid correct bluegras banjo technique. Everything is covered in depth, demonstrated slowly for you and explained thoroughly.
The book has loads of helpful advice on all the banjo basics and features easy to read music tablature with both right and left hand figuring indications and accent marks for the melody notes.
The two audio CDs come with all the lessons and songs demonstrated clearly at three speeds and also features backup play along tracks to practice with.
The DVD features high quality video with split screen technology and easy to use click through menus. Also included on the DVD is a special feature lesson on tuning the banjo, changing a string, putting on a strap, using the picks, tightening the head and other important banjo basics. The DVD has an added menu option for scrolling through the songs at the slow, medium or fast tempos separately.
In addition to all these important banjo fundamental lessons, here are some songs you'll learn: Boil the Cabbage Down, Tom Dooley, Old Time Religion, Two Dollar Bill, Cripple Creek, Blackberry Blossom and John Henry.

Fundamentals of Five String Banjo arrives as a four disc set. The DVD demonstrates all of the lessons in high quality split screen close-up video at three speeds, slow, medium and faster tempos. There are two audio CDs included that has all the songs and lessons at three speeds as well and a practice play along track for each song. I could not fit all the audio content on one CD, The fourth disc is a CDR disc of the book that can be viewed on your computer or printed one page at a time or in complete forrm. Having the book on CDR keeps from shrinking down the tab to fit in the DVD box, the full size tab book will be much easier to learn from and it saves 10.00 off the price, 3.00 off shipping too. The book is 52 pages long and is very comprehensive. It includes pictures, learning tips on each song, detailed tablature indications with accents marks for melody notes and right and left hand fingerings.
