BANJO GEAR USED BY ROSS NICKERSON

Hi, I'm Ross Nickerson the founder of Banjo Teacher.com. I hope this website is now and as it grows a great banjo resource for you! Quite a few people have inquired about the equipment I use. Here is a list of things I use and recommend.

I just bought a 1936 TB1 Gibson Tenor. It is being converted by banjo wizard Jim Burlile. I'm going to use the Goldtone Graphite neck on this one, I've heard great things about them and it will save a lot of time too.

I now endorse my own line of banjos made by Bellbird called Nick Kicks. One of my signature models features a lighter flathead tone ring that sounds every bit as good as any flathead I've played. Here is a link to some demo videos.

I also own a Huber Kalamazoo, they are excellent banjos, stay in tune, high quality, very good up the neck, made by a great banjo player. I've retired it since I got the Bellbird Cracka, and the TB 1.

I bought a Stelling Staghorn last year from a former student of mine. I always wanted one in particular for recording, Stellings in my opinion are excellent in the studio, very balanced and they mic well.

I use my custom made Nick Picks made by Bob Perry. They are larger then normal, no holes to pinch my fingers, stay tight and have a thick tone. I use a Dunlop large for thumbpick and I think the Sturm-N-Comfort picks are great for practice and around the house, I'm still using the old fashioned kind for performing.

I recommend a Fults tailpiece, they are the best and a great new innovation. The Fultls tailpiece significantly improved the tone on my banjo, I have the Cumberland Model.

I use GHS Sonny Osborne Strings, PF 175's 11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 11. It makes sense to use heavier 1st and 5th strings to count down on overtones and lighter inside strings from richer tone and more ease of play. I sometimes use GHS 140 JD Crowe set, depending on the banjo.

I use Snuffy Smith bridges. The Snuffy Smith Bridge improved the tone of my banjo by 30%. The bridge is a very, very important piece of equipment, so are the picks. I recommend the Snuffy Smith with no reservation. I use the compensated G string model. I use standard spacing cause I have short fingers but the Crowe wider spacing is a very popular option.

The capo I use is the Bill Stokes capo, The new G7 capos work great too, just started with those, you just squeeze them on, basically I recommend a capo that you can easily adjust the tension on the strings to cut down on any excessive tuning problems.
Everything else is stock.
Thanks for being interested! Ross Nickerson
