Review for "Gold Star GF-100W Wreath Banjo - Upgraded 2018 Version"
The Gold Star GF-100W (Wreath) has been reissued (2018) I just received news that Gold Star has unveiled the newest version of the GF 100-W Wreath. The Wreath pattern is based on the Wreath inlay design of the 1930's Gibson Mastertones. This Wreath design has always been one of the most popular with Gold Star banjos and I am so glad to have these back in production. The GF 100-W has the same tone components and construction as the new GF100-JD banjo released in 2017. The difference between the new Gold Star GF 100W and it's brother the new GF100JD is the different inlay pattern on the neck and peghead. Also, the GF100W has a 20 flat head hole tone ring and the GF100JD has a no hole flat head tone ring. Other than those two things the two models are identical. Both the Gold Star GF100W and The Gold Star GF100-JD both sound great. Frankly when I played these right out of the box I did not hear a noticeable difference between the no hole and 20 hole tone ring. For most people, choosing between these two will be based on the appearance, meaning which inlay pattern you prefer. You can't miss tone wise on either one of them. Description Gold Star The new GF-100W represents one of the finest examples of a prewar-inspired, five-string flathead resonator banjo; often considered the "Classic" bluegrass banjo. Legendary musicians the likes of J.D. Crowe, Sonny Osborne, and Rudy Lyle rank among the most notable pickers to establish the prewar “Wreath” patterned banjo from the 1930s as THE unmistakable flathead sound. By painstakingly studying every detail of original examples, Gold Star has achieved perfection in this exciting new 5-string added to the line. The one-piece, bound mahogany neck with a lightweight, single-way truss rod is comfortable to play and feels just like the original; while the 20-hole sand-cast tone ring, perfectly turned hard rock maple rim, and a bound mahogany resonator with dual concentric rings, combined; provide the perfect platform to create all the volume, drive and tone any player would need! So for that classic Bluegrass sound and an instrument that stepped right out of the 1930’s, without the high price tag.
